Description and definition state Lavatories are receptacles for personal sanitation that discharge waste disposal into the main sanitary waste system of a building.
These fixtures are manufactured in vitreous china, enameled cast iron, stainless steel, fiberglass, or plastic. These materials are durable, corrosion-resistant, and nonabsorbent. All lavatories come from the manufacturer with installation instructions. Once installed, all lavatories are tested from proper mechanical operation.
INSTALLING WALL-HUNG LAVATORIES-
To install a wall-hung lavatory, you need a mounting board, a mounting bracket, and the manufacturers specifications for the lavatory. The mounting board is installed between the studs. The lavatory is placed on the mounting bracket, which supports the
The manufacturers specifications are reviewed for the proper measurements before installing the lavatory (see Wall Hung Lavatories Images).
If the manufacturers specifications are not available, check the set of construction drawings and/or check with the supervisor.
The mounting board is installed first. Table 1-1 explains how to install the mounting board.
Installing a Mounting Board
Step 1. If the wall is finished, cut out a section and measure the two adjoining wall studs above the roughed-in plumbing. Mark notches that are even and level on both wall studs. If the wall is not finished, measure and mark the location for each notch on each wall stud (see A above).
Step 2. Cut out the notch on each wall stud to the same width and depth as the mounting board (see image).
Step 3. Place the mounting board in the notches. Nail the mounting board to the wall studs. Ensure that the mounting board is even with the edge of the wall studs facing you (see image).
1. If the wall studs are 2 by 4 inches, use 1-inch lumber for the mounting board.
2. If the wall studs are 2 by 6 inches, use 2-inch lumber for the mounting board.
If you cut a finished wall section, replace it after installing the mounting board.
Installing a Mounting Bracket -
1. Place the mounting bracket at the right height from the floor using the manufacturers specifications.
2. Level the bracket with a carpenters level.
Placement of Lavatory-
The lavatory is set on the mounting bracket next. Place the lavatory on the mounting bracket by pushing it down gently, but firmly, as far as it will go. Use a carpenters level to ensure that the lavatory is level
