Aikido For Law Enforcement Tactical Training Class held at Gilford Tech, May 09

We are often asked "How can you charge such a low rate?" - Well the answer is simple... we at K.B.A. practice for the Love of the art of Aikido. All the Instructors have other professions, and Kure Beach Aikido is run as a Not-For-Profit Club. We are an Incorporated Business for Insurance and Liability Reasons, however, the Instructors draw NO SALARY or take any compensation from monthly dues collected. All money goes to pay for our training space and to continue our Out-Reach Programs, buy mats and equipment, and to Sponsor Students when needed.

We Encourage you to train with WHOMEVER you wish... the more training you get, means you become a better student and Instructor. Come to our CLUB... we really want you! -BK

Kure Beach Aikido Family of Dojo:
KBA, UNCW Aikido, North East Cape Fear Aikido No Drama, Just Training!

Richard Price Sensei, and a few of the KBA students went to Morgantown, WV on July 24th - 26th to attend the seminar there. Here are a few photos of the event for your Aiki-Viewing Pleasure!

Friday August 21st the UNCW Aikido Club was back in session at a new location. The UNCW Aikido club was on-campus and restricted to UNCW Students, Faculty and Staff... but with the new location UNCW Aikido is open to EVERYONE who wants to train.

The 1st Class... all available instructors were on hand to introduce themselves to everyone... Anyone who wants to train, please feel free to drop by!

The Kure Beach Aikido Family is getting bigger.... Chad Lanier has opened Northeast Cape Fear Aikido at Porter's Neck.

I dropped by a couple of weeks ago to get a few shots for you, the loyal K.B.A. Web Site Viewer!

A HUGE Shout-Out To Willis Gill for the Kick-Ass Gishinkan Dojo T-Shirts!! You have gone above-and-beyond again!

Thank you AGAIN to Richard and Lynne Price for opening their home and giving us a most excellent place to have our Beach Party!
Its a rough life here at Kure Beach... but we get by... somehow.

The K.B.A.'s Anniversary - Beach Party!!

NEW! Saturday 11 July 2009 - K.B.A. had a Beach Party to Celebrate its 13th year on the mats! Everyone that could, that was around, not vacationing or otherwise out of town, came to Kure Beach. We set up across the street at Richard Price Sensei's neighborhood, and hit the beach about a mile north of the Kure Beach Pier..... away from all the tourists... it was low tide and it was very, very nice out! There was a nice Sand Bar out, and allowed us to really get us behind the breakers so we could PROPERLY boogie board and Body Surf.

We had coolers of drinks, Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, and all that goes with it! We had the XM Radio cranked up - Channel 58 (The Boneyard) if you must know. A few of us actually made it to the ocean and frolicked in the waves.... as we like to do....
John Maynard and his krewe stopped by for a moment.... in order to get the photo op! You know how we roll on the Cape Fear.... hamming it up for the camera! We appreciate him coming by and look forward to working out with him....

I think the highlight was the Peach, Mango, White Wine Sangria that Lynne Price brought. My goodness that stuff was good!

One of the greatest things about Aikido and Kure Beach Aikido, is that we are more of a family than a bunch of folks who get together to throw each other around. It REALLY is a family oriented art..... and with get-togethers like this.... it hammers that point home.

UNCW Aikido is Open to UNCW Students and the General Public. The dues for Students are $25.00, and Dues for the general public are $35.00 per month.

UNCW Aikido has a new home and is open for training for whomever wants it.....

UNCW Aikido has a brand spanking new - fresh-out-of-the-oven web site. Take a look at it HERE!

Well it is Official.... As of July 7th... Kure Beach Aikido is a Petulant Teenager!
We will be "eye-rolling", "sneaking out at night", "mouthing off", "Texting too much and running up the phone bill", "Taking the car without permission", and getting into trouble as most teenagers do! We can't get caught sneaking a beer, 'cuz our "Dad" is a cop!

THE LATEST! Kure Beach Aikido received its Official Dojo Name. And it has been a long time coming.
"Back-In-The-Day" Toyoda Sensei would like to visit a particular Dojo before giving that dojo their name, so he could get a feel for the Dojo as a whole... the space, and the people in it. Because at the time, we were a small club, just starting out, we could not accommodate the logistics of a Seminar, and therefore could not get Toyoda Sensei down to Kure Beach before his passing.
Many a long year has passed, and we have been know simply as Kure Beach Aikido. Although other Dojo have a "Name", most have a "Japanese Name" to go along with it. It wasn't until our last seminar that Richard Price Sensei requested a "Traditional/Official Dojo Name" from the A.W.A. Chief Instructor, Andrew Sato Sensei. We received the Dojo Name scroll and Richard Price Sensei officially revealed our name to the members of Kure Beach Aikido on Thursday June 25th 2009.

After months of very careful consideration Andy Sato Sensei came up with a spectacular name for us. Although we will are known throughout the Universe as Kure Beach Aikido.... we will also be know as "Gishinkan Dojo" - Mind of Justice Dojo. Thank you Andy Sato Sensei!!

Three versions of our Dojo Name were revealed on 25 June 2009 - From Left to Right Bill King Sensei, Chad Lanier, and John Lothes.

CLICK THE PHOTO FOR SOME PIX OF US ON THE BEACH AND IN THE WATER!
We at K.B.A. shook it up a bit and did all of our classes on the beach. Tuesday June 9th we did Kumitachi and last Thursday June 11th was Kumijo. The darn sand gets everywhere, and if we throw each other... we all look like a bunch of Sugar Cookies.... but luckily.... we can shed our Gis and jump in the water to wash ourselves off.
Bummer to be you... if you are land locked! HA! -BK

A quick note by BK Sensei: I have been accused of favoring the ladies during training by a few people... and I tell them point blank that I do! The reason is that, especially for the women in college, there are a lot of opportunities to be attacked or have "unwanted advances while out and about"... So I do EVERYTHING I CAN to train the ladies to get out of trouble "QUICK".... The Empowerment of Women is one of the things that is of great satisfaction for me in Aikido....
I asked one of our students to write about how Aikido has Empowered her.... and it is well executed.... please ladies.... read this... learn... and train. You don't have to train in Aikido... learn SOMETHING.... and Empower Yourself.
A Woman’s View of Aikido: the Power to Empower - By Laura Hiles

"... As a woman, I believe the scariest encounter is one in which brute strength is exploited. The ability to strip this factor out of a situation and to even the playing field in a confrontation is one of the most empowering skills I have ever known. But having the basic ability to protect myself in a physical fight barely scratches the surface of what aikido has imparted to my life."

I wanted to say a special thank you to Chaplain Samuel Kim for putting together the retreat for the wives and children of our deployed heroes from Ft. Bragg. I know our students learned a great deal from these families. This is the beauty of teaching and sharing.

It has been our policy to donate our time and materials for such a worthy cause. It is the least we could do for these heroes who put their lives on hold, shed blood, hardships and at times give the ultimate sacrifice. I was contacted by the events manager at the Marriott Hotel last night that the military appreciated our offer but wanted to make a donation to our other outreach programs.

New: K.B.A. is looking forward to another "Building Strong Family Bonds" session this August and September. We had a great time with all the Kids and their Moms.... below is the last session.

Kure Beach Aikido Club continues to support a special weekend retreat for the wives and children of deployed Ft. Bragg soldiers called to duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event is held at the Marriott Hotel in Carolina Beach, NC. The theme for the weekend was titled, "Building Strong Family Bonds".

Long deployments put a tremendous amount of stress on the family. Many strategies, exercises and techniques were practiced during the weekend. They included deep Ki breathing, Ki development exercises as well as self defense strategies and techniques. The club did a two hour block on Friday night and another two hour Saturday morning session for the children.
The Mom's were brought in the third hour on Saturday for the children to demonstrate what they had learned. This also allowed the Mom's to participate and have some quality one on one time with their kid's. A special homework assignment was given to the children. The children agreed to invite their Mom's on at least a thirty minute walk the following week.
During the walk they were to tell their Mom's three things that had happened during their day and ask about three things that happened in their Mom's day. We hope this will facilitate quality time for good communication and lead to more frequent walks.

Special thanks to all of the KBA members who participated and worked with the children. We are proud to be of service to those who Serve U.S.!

AS ALWAYS: K.B.A. will have Kyu Grade testing those who qualify on the last Thursday class of the month. So those of you on notice.... better bone up on Technique!

K.B.A. is a club, and is Not-For-Profit. Because of that we do not re-sell uniforms and then have to collect tax on them. If you need a GI for practice you can purchase them from...

EBOGU or Century Martial Arts... Both supply excellent uniforms...
A note for the Parents of Children in the Kid's Class.... You can purchase a regular WHITE Karate Uniform for them if you like, instead of getting a Judo/Aikido uniform. They are significantly cheaper, and with the rate the kids are growing, it is more economical to keep them in this sort of a uniform because it can be replaced inexpensively.

The Kid's Class is growing again.... and K.B.A. would love to see more little faces on the mat... Aikido is a great confidence builder, an excellent to calm the mind and unite it woth the body... If anyone has any ideas on what we can do to get more childern on the mat, please let me know. I will generate the necessary information to pass aroud...

Well there have been many pages updated... lots of new stuff to look at.... Updates are continuing... stand by... more stuff on the way... -BK
P.S. - Many people have asked... what is that on your knuckles.... well it says "GRFX THUG" (Graphics Thug)... and has been "Photoshopped In".... I do not have my knuckles tattooed. Just an FYI.

The K.B.A. Site is updated as often as possible... This Page Updated: Friday, 03-Sep-2010 14:14:45 MDT
