Life is what happens to you when you've made other plans." This statement certainly explains the foundation of the family-owned and operated Pets and Company store in Concord, North Carolina.
Owners David and Krista Weygand have often joked that they got married on Saturday, November 12, and went to work on Monday, November 14! Actually, David had already opened the store in September of 1983, but returned to Burlington, NC, in time for his wedding. David had worked at a pet shop in Burlington as a teenager in the 1970's, but then became a professional photographer, and then a drugstore manager at a local mall. His future wife, Krista Marine, worked at the same mall during the summer before her college graduation to become a music teacher in the public school system. In 1982, their future together seemed to be well mapped out.
Early in 1983, through a strange set of circumstances out of their control, both David and Krista became unemployed. This explains the part about life happening to you when you've made other plans ... David determined to become an entrepreneur, self-employed, his own boss. And so, with the help of his former pet-shop employer, the opportunity presented itself... David and Krista talked it over, discussed it thoroughly, prayed earnestly, and then took the greatest steps of faith yet in their young lives....they got married, moved away from everyone and everything they'd known, and opened a retail pet business together.
To this day, they say that working together has been the greatest part of their business experience, and you can usually find them in their store, greeting many customers by name, handing out free treats to customers' dogs, advising new hobbyists on tropical fish, or answering hundreds of questions regarding pet care. To complete the story, David and Krista welcomed their daughter, Melissa, on June 19, 1989, who is the joy of their lives, now a college student, who works in the shop when she's not in classes.
Pets and Company considers pets to be an essential part of the quality and enjoyment of a person's life. Living with animals naturally presents a wide variety of experiences and issues, and our shop desires to assist each customer with the products, supplies, and service that will create and maintain the health and well-being of each pet, thus assuring the joy and satisfaction of each pet's keeper. We want every visit to our shop to be pleasant and worthwhile, and we appreciate the support that our customers offer to us!
