When to call The Clifford Division
The earlier you involve an attorney, the better your options will be. Being investigated by a law enforcement agency can be upsetting and disorienting. You may be confused about when to contact a lawyer or if it is even necessary. Involving a criminal defense attorney early may keep you from being charged in the first place. If you are never charged, there is no conviction and no record of the charge. If charges are already filed, a criminal defense lawyer may help to keep charges at the lowest possible level. The Clifford Division is experienced in successfully intervening on the part of our clients in North Carolina state courts and in federal courts.

Remember that individuals other than law enforcement officials can take out warrants that result in criminal charges. Examples of warrants taken out by individuals cover charges stemming from domestic situations, from neighborhood disputes and from bad checks, to name a few.
It is never a mistake to talk to a criminal defense attorney as soon as you realize there is a potential problem.

Companies and corporations also need early intervention
It is important to retain a criminal defense attorney to work with your company when it is under investigation by a regulatory or law enforcement agency. We routinely work with forensic experts to obtain records, documents, computers and other storage devices analyzed and organized for presentation. Timing is important and work needs to be done as soon as possible to produce the best possible result.
If you are already facing criminal charges
If you are already facing charges, you still have options. With early representation, your lawyer may be able to help you:
Get a voluntary dismissal
Reach an agreement to assist the state or federal government in its investigation or prosecution of other cases to reduce your charge or sentence
Work out the best plea agreement possible
The client and the attorney decide together whether going to trial is the best option. If you are convicted, there may still be available to you to reduce your sentence. If you assist the state or federal government in cases against others, the prosecution may ask for a reduction in your sentence.
Whatever the circumstances, the earlier the attorney is involved, the more options you have.

HOW WE WORK
Our focus is on the client with our entire staff attuned to meeting the needs of each client. We try to make the intake process as simple as possible, offering translation services for interviews and written documents if needed, having court records and other documents ready for the attorney before he speaks with the client or prospective client, and scheduling appointments for consultations and for meetings with the attorney regarding the case. We want to be respectful of your time. There are times that emergencies arise or that court goes longer and we may need to contact you to reschedule. It is important that we be able to reach you. We will not do this unless we have to, but there are events that arise that require some flexibility.
COMMUNICATION WITH ATTORNEYS
Both attorneys have an assistant who is in constant contact with the attorney and who can take and relay information from the client and get this information to the attorney as quickly as possible. This is the most effective and most efficient way of reaching the attorney as the assistant can have all necessary paperwork and information ready for the attorney prior to his calling the client or prospective client. Locke Clifford is often in court and handles cases all over North Carolina and may be traveling out of Greensboro. His assistant, Ashley, is the person to speak with regarding any matter for Locke and Andrew’s assistant, Stephanie, is the person to speak with regarding any matter for Andrew. Andrew is in court in Guilford County almost every day, sometimes into the afternoon, and his assistant with have calls ready for him to return when he is back in the office.
The best telephone number to use is 336-574-2788. This number rings directly to our division and is relayed to staff after business hours. It will also be answered if anyone is working after hours or on weekends. Since the attorneys’ cell phones must be turned off in state court and cannot be taken into the federal courthouse building at all, all messages should go through the office number rather than the attorneys’ cell phone numbers.
Another good way to reach the attorneys is through email – Clifford@cliffordlawoffice.com
We have other staff members who handle payments, do legal research, work at the courthouse, and handle routine correspondence and phone calls. We do much of our work over the telephone and by email when appropriate.
It is important to us that we be able to reach each client quickly should the need arise. We ask that a current telephone number (home, cell or work), mailing address and email address (if one is available) be on file in our office. If changes occur, we ask that the client call and give this information to our staff. This is a client responsibility. Please be sure that you are known at the mailing address that you provide and that mail will be delivered to you at that address. Returned mail is costly and very slow so you may be missing important information about your case and we do not know that you do not have it.
We will work with you regarding payment for legal fees. We accept credit cards in person and over the phone. We will devise a payment plan and will allow deferred payment with a signed fee agreement prior to the first court date. We also accept checks, money orders and cash in person and checks and money orders through the mail.
We will work with you regarding the new $20.00 fee implemented by the AOC for deferred payment for court costs. This is done on a case by case basis.
Referrals from clients are an important part of our business and we value them. We want your experience with our office to be a good one and we will work hard to see that you are well served. Please let us know what we can do to improve if you find any problems. Please contact Lynda at 336-574-2788.
