Who are We?
Wilkes Therapeutic Riding Program is a compassionate organization founded with the purpose of building character and confidence in challenged individuals of all ages. We are a nonprofit 501-C3 organization. Wilkes Therapeutic Riding Program is also an active member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. NARHA provides us with resources for continuing education along with standards of safety and certification, and accreditation.
WTRP's mission is to improve quality of life for individuals with special needs by enhancing physical health and development of life skills thru participation in equestrian activities. Our vision is to turn dreams into reality by facilitating success in a safe and stimulating environment, leading to life long benefits of increased self-esteem, confidence and motivation. Through bi-yearly horse shows, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of events with fellow students! Our next Charity Show will be held in the spring of 2007.
Our Instructors and Classes
Classes are taught by NARHA certified instructors. Classes are customized to meet the needs and goals of each individual and maximize the benefit received through the program. Instructors are assisted as needed by volunteers to provide for and ensure participant safety. We are now happy to offer therapeutic vaulting as part of our program. This is a unique activity combining the benefits of equestrian activities with dance. Vaulting helps to develop coordination, balance, strength, trust, teamwork, creativity and self confidence. Please visit our tour to find vaulting photos! Classes are offered year round! Lessons are enhanced by a beautiful setting at the foot of Rendezvous Mountain located in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
