In July, we were honored to host Lisa Ringelspaugh's show of inventive and entertaining works interpreting Asheville as it might have been painted by some great artists of the past. If you have lived in Asheville for any length of time you have most likely heard Asheville compared to Paris. Who knows? Maybe there is something to it... Lisa's series of paintings explores that notion with a good deal of wit and a great deal more talent and expertise.
Lisa Ringelspaugh is a longtime resident and professional painter known for her lively and masterful watercolor interpretations of local landmarks. Inspired by turn-of-the-century Paris, Lisa asked herself, If those artists visited Asheville, then what would happen? Through Lisas brush, Matisse, Gauguin, Chagall and Dali have finally come to visit our fair city and have reinterpreted their favorite works in a new southern Appalachian light. Seen here, "Busking for Rubles", on which Lisa comments, "Often there's a classical musician playing in this storefront. Who better to join in than Chagall's blue and purple violinists? Oh yes, I know Chagall was Russian, not French."
Paris of the South? is a fun, artistic romp through the city of Asheville, from Kims Wig Shop to the S&W Cafeteria. Some of these delightful paintings remain available at BlackBird. Stop by to see!

Drew Findley of Subject Matter Studio, generously donated his time and talent to create this special screen-printed poster for our September event in support of Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. Only 50 posters were made, and each is accompanied by a $30 certificate toward framing. The total cost is only $75 with 100% of the proceeds donated to BWAR. Drew is a local graphic artist known particularly for his work on behalf of performers like The Avett Brothers and his covers of Mountain Xpress. THERE ONCE WAS...A LIMERICK
Inspired by the wit evident in her Asheville Dream Series, Lisa Ringelspaugh's friend, Amos, of Austin, Texas has graciously endowed each painting with a charming limerick. Here's a sample, pertaining to Lisa's take on Kim's Wig Shop:
OFF WITH HER HEAD!

It's all in fun, folks. Lisa's an artist with loads of talent, and a lot to say, but mainly she wants to make you smile.

WOMEN ON WINE (WOW)
