Yes, it is the silly season again: namely mid-term elections which typically favor those not in power. This year the language and insinuations of many politicians has reached new highs (no, I meant lows). Add to that uninformed anger and fear to the mix and you have the necessary ingredients for a country-wide political cock fight (which are illegal in most states).
It brings to mind some old mountain political sayings like:
Mud thrown is ground lost.
In 2005, Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report coined the word truthiness which is a truth that a person claims to know intuitively without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination or facts. (See Wikipedia for much more on this word). This political season has certainly guaranteed the words future in describing most of a politicians utterances whether or not he/she is running for office.
Hopefully you will get this newsletter before November 2. Please vote. Our government needs to know what you think is best for this country. Democrats and Republicans alike need to be reminded that their charge is to lead us in a responsible manner.
Maybe this church sign I saw recently is for all of us irrespective of our politics:
I saw that but I still love you anyway.
Our next wine tasting at the Purple Onion draws its title from Kermit Lynchs first book, Adventures on the Wine Route because it has inspired this tasting of French wines from several different regions of France. Kermit Lynch is an American wine importer, author and winemaker based out of Berkeley, California. Alice Waters has called him a revolutionary wine merchant who, almost single-handedly, has brought about a new understanding of wine as a unique expression of land, tradition, and people.
In 1972 he opened a retail wine shop and later began importing and distributing nationally. In 2000 he was named Wine Professional of the Year by the James Beard Foundation, in 1998 the French government presented him a medal and named him Chevalier de l'Ordre de Mrite Agricole, and in 2005 he received the Chevalier de la Lgion d'Honneur.
His book Adventures on the Wine Route, won the Veuve Clicquot Wine Book of the Year award. Clive Coates called it quirky, opinionated, hilarious, riveting, illuminating, totally original and highly recommended. After reading a borrowed copy of Richard McKinneys shortly after we began wine tastings at the Purple Onion I would concur and have since purchased a copy of my own.
The tasting on November 9 will feature eight Kermit Lynch wines selected from the major wine producing regions of France and several small plates chosen to pair well with these wines. The menu will feature many locally sourced foods as well as a selection of French cheeses. Robert Braswell of Tryon Distributing will be on hand to enlighten us on the wines. Cost for the evening is $45 per person and seating is limited Reservations can be made by calling the Purple Onion at 749-1179.

There is this old saying that if you had an opportunity to select any bodys troubles, you would probably choose your own. I had a chance to think about that this past month as I had back surgery to clear a blockage between two of my vertebrae, Not only is my recovery going well, but my wife and I were on the receiving end of an incredible outpouring of thoughts, prayers and concerns for a satisfactory resolution of my problem.
My theory is that a town the size of Saluda is small enough for people to know and care about the things that happen to people here, both good and bad. It brings out the best in us as we reach out to others when they are the most vulnerable and anxious. It also reaffirms that this same hospitality is being extended to others here.
It creates a family-like environment all through the community and certainly is an example of what we try to do and be at the Purple Onion every day.
Here are some other things that I learned from an old farmer about living a meaningful life:
Dont interfere with something that isnt bothering you.
