The Bible says mans wickedness was great on the earth (Gen. 6:5). Mankind was bent toward evil continually and this grieved God. There was an exception. The mans name was Noah. He walked with God and was a righteous man (Gen. 6:9). God decided to cleanses the earth from the corruption and violence by bringing a flood upon the earth. Noah was to build an ark to save himself and his family. The Bible says he did this by faith. (Hebrews 11:7). He took God at his word and did all God commanded (Genesis 6:22). The flood is mentioned in the New Testament too (2 Peter 3). Here are some lessons to be learned from this account in history: God will not spare the ungodly. Those who persist in ungodly behavior God will destroy. God punished the ungodly behavior of people long ago before the flood and he punished the evil cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Here we have an example of what happens to those who are against God and His righteousness (2 Peter 2:5-6). In the future, God will not destroy the world with a flood, but it will be destroyed by fire (2 Peter 3:1-13). Jesus will come again. People will be living just like they want to live but the earth and everything in it will be destroyed by fire (2 Peter 3:11). Salvation comes through water. God was patient while the ark was being built but just a few were saved. The people did not change. In likeness to long ago (1 Peter 3:20-21) salvation for us today comes through water the waters of baptism (Mark 16:16; Romans 6:3-5).
