R-Value is an important aid to consumers when comparing proposals and specifications for different brands or suppliers of the same type of insulation. It is less useful when comparing different insulation materials. R-for-R all insulation is NOT created equal!

Shoot the Pink Marauder
If not fiber glass, then what? In terms of performance, nothing touches injected foam. The realities of both the environmental and the dollar costs, as well as potential problems with installation, however, lead me toward promoting a more benign insulation-cellulose. You will find no better value than this poor cousin of the Pink Marauder! Again, as a thermographer I consistently see cellulose as a hands-down winner.

Do you want fiberglass dissolving in your lungs?
Owens Corning states that insulation fiberglass dissolves in the lungs in days or months. An important question remains. What are the health impacts for workers who are exposed every day? Other glass and ceramic fibers that are more durable pose significant risk because they do not dissolve in the lungs. Such fibers can be found in kiln and oven insulation, plastic composites, high tech polyurethane impregnated fabrics.
