New Bern, NC..."The Southern Surprise"
In 2010, New Bern will officially be 300 years old! Come join us as we celebrate this milestone. Special events and activities are planned throughout the year to honor our heritage and share it with others.
Nestled at the confluence of two of the South's loveliest rivers, the namesake of Berne, Switzerland, New Bern surely qualifies as one of the most pleasant surprises in the South, if not the nation. Although small - the metropolitan area numbers about 45,000 - New Bern has a surprisingly sophisticated manufacturing base (Bosch and Moen are major employers), a hospital with the services of a city many times larger, a wealth of recreational opportunities, and a quality of life that is truly unique.
Founded in 1710, New Bern was the colonial capital of North Carolina and home to Tryon Palace and Gardens, and was the birthplace of Pepsi-Cola. This charming city has long been a destination for tourists. New Bern has a myriad of homes dating to the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries which have been lovingly restored to their previous grandeur. Chyrsanthemums blaze across the landscape in the fall, and the almost continuous splash of azaleas and dogwoods in the spring are breathtaking.
New Bern also attracts large numbers of retirees looking for a mild climate with which to enjoy the many outdoor recreational opportunities. Sailors and fisherman ply the waters in the Neuse River and nearby Pamlico Sound twelve months of the year. The graceful Trent River is a water skier's delight. There are public, private and semi-private golf courses from which to choose in and surrounding New Bern.
Military, both active and retired, make New Bern their home because of its proximity to Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.
Festivals and cultural events are practically perpetual. Just walking down the quaint tree-lined streets of New Bern is a great way to spend the day. A warm welcome awaits those who come, whether they come for a day or a lifetime. The only thing that isn't surprising is the "southern hospitality" which is as present today as it was in the 18th century! Search for a home in New Bern.
