What's happening this week: Sunday, November 21"Thanks Given"Scripture: Deuteronomy 26:1-118:30, 8:45, 9:45 and 11 am ~ Ashley Crowder Stanley, preaching On Sunday, you will be asked to remember, to think about the memories that feed your soul, to remember times when you have experienced the presence of God most vividly. Our scripture will come from the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy, 26:1-11. In this scripture, the people are reminded of their long and blessed history which has been guided by God from the beginning. God's love and presence are the source of the people's thanksgiving and the memory of God's care is the basis of their worship. When there is awareness of God, can gratitude be far behind? Phillip Newell has written a poem which speaks to this bubbling up of gratitude: To experience the goodness in life, therefore,is to be in touch with the gift of God.We all have memories of the goodness of creation. We have smelled the freshness of the earth after rain.We have known the delight of biting into a crisp autumn apple. We have gazed upon field after field of golden corn.We have touched the smoothness of a rock, sea-washed for millennia. The goodness is there. We are called into an awareness of it . . . .All ground is holy, for within it is the goodness of God.(J. Philip Newell, The Book of Creation)As you prepare for worship on Sunday, reflect on your memories "of the goodness of creation," read the scripture from Deuteronomy and be aware of the places upon which you stand that may ~ Ashley Church Council/Charge Conference ~ Thursday, Nov. 18, 7 pm in the Sanctuary.
