Little Switzerland received its name from early summer residents of the area who thought the scenery resembled that of the Swiss Jura Mountains. Spruce Pine, with a population of approximately 2,000 people, is the largest town in Mitchell County. Bakersville NC is the gateway to Roan Mountain and the popular Rhododendron Festival.

Additionally Burnsville is a great "base camp" for your Smoky Mountain vacation plans. Burnsville is also the county seat for Yancey County. Yancey County is home to Mt. Mitchell (at 6,684 feet, the highest mountain east of the Mississippi) and 18 additional peaks with elevations exceeding 6,300 feet.
