THE PROPER WAY OF STORING AND TRANSPORTING PROPANE CYLINDERS
7/31/2019
Propane cylinders have changed the world! Food trucks, outdoor grilling, camping, and more have all been revolutionized by the invention of the propane tank.

PROPANE CYLINDER STORAGE

Question: What’s the best place in which to store propane cylinders?

Answer: In an area that is away from heavy traffic and is well ventilated.

On a flat surface, on a material that will not collect water and is nonflammable (such as concrete), they should be placed in an upright position for storage. Some containers may be rendered useless by pitting or rust caused when cylinders are exposed to mud, damp grass, and other undesirable conditions. Tanks should be stored away from a source of ignition – outside, on a firm surface. If at all possible, do not store propane cylinders indoors.

PROPANE CYLINDER POSITIONING

The vapor space of the container and the relief valve should always be in direct communication with each other. This is essential in the positioning of propane tanks. When tanks are stored in an upright position, this direct contact is achieved. A considerable hazard is presented if propane tanks are stored on their side as escaping liquid (as opposed to vapor) presents a far more dangerous condition.

It’s also a good idea that the safety relief valve, in case any propane escape, is pointed away from anything that could cause an accident or fire if contact occurred. In all circumstances, vertically upright positioning is imperative for proper storage.

THE TRANSPORTATION OF PROPANE CYLINDERS

There are several factors that must be met for the proper transportation of propane cylinders. These are as follows:

  • No more than five – At one time, no more than five propane cylinders can be transported. If the vehicle in which the tanks are being transferred is open, the cylinder and propane combined mass should not be in excess of 500 kg.

Note: Per placard requirements, vehicles must be placarded if, either in an enclosed or open vehicle, these limits are exceeded. Appropriate training is necessary for the person operating the vehicle and they must carry the appropriate supporting documentation.

  • Enclosed vehicle transportation – Propane tanks must be secured and transported in an upright position when being moved in an enclosed vehicle.
  • Open vehicle transportation – Tanks should be strongly secured and in an upright position when being transported in an open vehicle. Additionally, so that it is easily viewable from the outside of the vehicle, the label on the tank should be displayed.
